About the Site

Let’s Get Off This Rock Already is a space blog, first and foremost. But it’s not your typical space blog. While focused niches are all the rage these days, I prefer a broader approach, drawing creatively from a range of different subjects. Each week this site offers readers what they can’t quite predict in advance. I write explorations of deep-space phenomena; I post tongue-in-cheek reviews of sci-fi movies and books; I even share original short stories, both standalone and serialized. But there are a few things you can count on:

  • I strive for quality and accuracy, always. Posts are carefully edited before they go out, and I can guarantee thoughtful, well-written content with a careful eye for detail. Typos still slip through the cracks now and then; when that happens, don’t hesitate to let me know!
  • With some exceptions, all posts fit under the umbrella of space, sci-fi, fantasy, or alternate history. I’ve always had an eye for the speculative; asking what might be, or what might have been, is often more interesting than straightforward discussions of what is.
  • Above all, Let’s Get Off This Rocky Already! is an aesthetic project. I am very particular about aesthetics. Every sentence I write, every image I add, is a deliberate choice—sometimes, an agonizing one. Even if topics seem like they came out of left field, they all fit into a grander design.
  • I aim to post at a brisk cadence, about two or three times per week. Other than that, I do not commit to a specific schedule. With timing, as with content, I like to keep my readers on their toes.

That’s my sales pitch. Now, the archives are plentiful, so go on and explore! And if you would like to see more of my work going forward, make sure you subscribe for updates. Trust me, I have some cool things in the pipeline.

Statement on AI:

Generative AI is a controversial topic these days. I myself have mixed opinions on it. I have found, though, that it’s amazing for a very specific purpose: livening up posts with colorful, royalty-free visuals, whereas in previous years I had to make do with the dregs of Wikimedia Commons. It’s also just a fun tool to mess around with, sometimes with wacky results.

This is why Let’s Get Off This Rock Already! features AI-generated imagery in certain posts, in the site banner image, and in the site logo. I will always label it where it appears. Trust me, I’m as tired of AI slop as anyone else, so when I do use ChatGPT or Midjourney, I consider it my responsibility to make sure that the output looks good. Sometimes, this entails considerable iteration and fine-tuning on my end.

For the big-ticket items, like covers for my novels, I always pay human artists. I believe in supporting human creativity, and I put my money where my mouth is. Furthermore—I do not, as a matter of pride, use AI in any way for the composition of text on this site. Every word you see here was typed by human fingers on a keyboard. Every idea came directly from a human brain. That, in my view, is the way things should be.
